From the Greek daphne, "laurel". Daphne was a nymph whose Apollo was in love and who had to be transformed into laurel by her father, the river god Peneus, to escape him. This plant then became the symbol of the Greek god. One of the most illustrious Daphne is the English novelist Daphne Du Maurier. Three of his novels - including Rebecca - inspired Alfred Hitchcock. The Daphne are celebrated on October 5th. Its derivatives: Dafna, Daffy, Dafne.
